    • ]]>     The Haiku Project is proud to announce the availability of Haiku R1A2, its second official alpha release. Haiku is an open source operating system that specifically targets personal computing intended for desktop use. Alpha 2 is a stable development release and a milestone on the way to the upcoming Release 1.

    Eight months ago the Haiku Project released its first alpha, making many aware of its presence. Alpha 2 is the direct result of the contributions of many volunteers from around the world. With it the project hopes to entice more people to contribute, growing the project and reaching the goals for R1, and beyond.

    The Haiku developer team is excited to have this improved version available to a wider audience and more extensively tested, and invites the public to help improve the quality of Haiku.

    Notable Changes Between Alpha 1 and Alpha 2

    • WiFi support with WEP encryption introduced
    • WebPositive - a native Webkit based browser
    • New Locale Kit allows localization/translation
    • Improved USB mass storage performance
    • ACPI enabled by default
    • Bash command-line shell updated to version 4.x
    • Message Signal Interrupts (MSI)
    • Increased POSIX compliance
    • Increased performance

    The Haiku Project is a volunteer based initiative started on August 18th, 2001, whose goal is to develop and promote the adoption of Haiku, an operating system which is fast and responsive, easy to use, powerful and enjoyable for everyone, both users and developers. Haiku is not a Linux distribution, nor does it use the Linux kernel. Haiku adopts design and concepts introduced in BeOS™ and take these to the next level by fusing them with recent advances.

    Most of the Haiku code is released under the very liberal MIT License. Some third party components (e.g.: some media codecs, libraries, etc.) may use other licenses.

    • ]]>     This release features new swapcache, a tmpfs port, fast-fsync for HAMMER, improved random I/O, and numerous other goodies. 2.6.2 features a major bug fix to a HAMMER issue related to reblocking full filesystems.

    Users running a late 2.5 or the 2.6.1 release are urged to upgrade to 2.6.2 as soon as possible. 2.6.2 fixes a serious HAMMER filesystem corruption bug related to reblocking full or nearly full HAMMER filesystems.

    • ]]>     Three release options are now available for 32-bit: Bare-bones CD ISO, Bare-bones bootable USB disk-key image (minimum 1G USB stick needed), and a GUI bootable USB disk-key image with a full X environment. The GUI USB image replaces the DVD ISO image in the previous release, to work around issues with DVDs simply being too slow to boot an X environment from.

    Two release options are available for 64-bit: Bare-bones CD ISO and Bare-bones bootable USB disk-key image. The 64-bit release is now fully supported.

    Currently the GUI disk-key image is not yet available due to some late issues with pkgsrc. It will be put up as soon as the issues are resolved.

    DragonFly BSD is a free Unix-like operating system created as a fork of FreeBSD 4.8. DragonFly BSD 2.6.1 was announced on 06 April 2010.

There will be one more release from this branch to allow future improvements to be made available in the 7-STABLE branch but at this point most FreeBSD developers are focused on 8-STABLE.
