South Korea Has The Faster Internet Connection While Most Attack Traffics Are From Russia

The quarterly publication from Akamai “The State of the Internet” 4th quarter 2009 is available.

The report looks at global internet connectivity such as internet penetration and speed; and security issues such as attack traffic.

According to the report, the top attack traffic originating county is still Russia, originating 13% of the global attacks. Port 445 Port (Used:Microsoft-DS) again was overwhelmingly the top port (74%) targeted by attacks among the top ten countries, in some cases by orders of magnitude more than the next most targeted port.

Global Internet Penetration looks at the number of unique IP addresses seen by Akamai compare to the population of each of those countries. Scandinavian countries top the chart with Norway at number 1.

Within United States, New Jersey is number 1 in the United States Internet Penetration chart with 1.44 Unique IPs per Capita.

Akamai classifies connection speeds into three categories, the “high broadband” is for connections of 5 Mbps or greater, the “broadband” data is for connections greater than 2 Mbps; and the “narrowband” data is for connections slower than 256 Kbps.

Sightseeing + Medical Check Up Tourism Targets Wealthy Chinese

As the economy of China grows, the number of wealthy Chinese who can afford overseas holidays and top medical care also grows.

Japan, a close neighbor of China, is trying to capture part of these markets in one go. Nishinippon Shimbun (West Japan Newspaper) reports that the Japan Tourism Agency is pushing for travel tours that combine sightseeing and medical treatment to wealthy Chinese tourists. They are promoting tours that offer travelers its advanced medical technology in diagnostics and treatments, at the same time, its famous therapeutic elements such as Japanese food and Japanese hot springs.

For fiscal 2010, their focus is on the China. They are planning to gathering information such as awareness and expectations about medial tourism in Japan and invite the media and travel agencies to visit Japanese medical facilities. Already there are plans to make information such as list of medical institutions that accept foreigners available to related parties, and investigating the possibility of a “Medical Visa”.

Naruto Strait, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan

Some local governments have already started their own programs. Tokushima Prefecture, in the eastern part of the Shikoku Island in Japan, already started pilot tours in late March. The tours features sightseeing to the famous whirling tides in the Naruto Strait (Japanese: 鳴門海峡), low calorie delicacy from local ingredients and diabetes screening tests.

According to the Planning Division of the Prefecture Tourism Board, participants highly appreciated the smooth tests, they wanted to increase the type of medical tests available, however, there was not enough information or guide books in Chinese.

Yukio Hatoyama (Japanese: 鳩山由紀夫)

This is part of the New Growth Strategy announced by the Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama (Japanese: 鳩山由紀夫) on 31 Dec 2010. The target is to see 25 million foreign tourists to Japan from year 2020; and grow 30 million foreign tourists in the future.

Japan Tourism Agency, established on 01 Oct 2008, is an extra-ministerial bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan.

Calil, A One-Stop Real Time Book Searching of Over 4300 Libraries + Amazon

Calil.jp provides one-stop book searching of over 4300 libraries all over Japan together with Amazon database in real time, the website was officially launch on 10 March 2010. Users can cross search multiple libraries for specific books and their availability for borrowing.

A users can specify a search from one specific library or a number of libraries, such as all libraries in Tokyo area. The website will return information such as “Not in library collection”, “In Library collection (Not for loan)”, “In library collection (On loan now)”, “In library collection (Available for borrow)”, etc, for each of the libraries. If the book is available for borrowing, the user can reserve the book by entering library membership details.

It search Amazon database and show if they have the book and how much.

There also four other major functions:
Popular Books: It shows all current popular books and at the same time check if they are available in specified libraries, and the current status of the books.

Authors: Search book by authors, and again will check for availability.

Library Maps: Search library by prefectures and towns. It will show the physical address, telephone number, web address details along with a Google map of the location of the library. It will also list the libraries in the vicinity and their distances from current library.

Want to Read List: In a book search, there are two buttons under each book, “Want to Read” & “Read”. Users can record their reading history, reserved book list, also their library list after signing in. Users can then print out or send the lists to their mobile phone. It will be much easier to find favorite books or reserved books once their get into the library. Users can log in using Google, Yahoo Japan and Mixi account.

There is also an API where developers can create applications to obtain search results, use mobile phone to search the nearest library, etc.

At the moment, the Japan Library Association already has a OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) system which allows cross library book search and the status of those books. OPAC now covers about 79% public libraries in Japan. However individual library needs to provide this OPAC search on their websites, but the scope and quality of those websites varies greatly. There is no one single entry point for users. And many people don’t even know they can search libraries on the web.

In the future, calil.jp plans to widen their coverage to other online bookstores, publishers, newspapers, library system development company, an affiliate e-book, etc.

Calil.jp service was based on OPAC and was developed by an American company called Nota Inc., which is based in California. One of their most noted products so far is notaland, a collaborative web platform which allows users to create, share and collaborate on presentations and many different forms of online materials.

Man Arrested For Providing Links To Uploaded Music Files In Overseas Storage Site

A 46 years old man in Japan was arrested for violation of Copyright Act (Infringement of Public Transmission Rights), that is, putting copyrightable material on the World Wide Web or an FTP server etc, by providing links to uploaded music files in overseas storage site.

He was arrested in connection of personally creating a large number of internet hyperlinks to copyrighted music files that were uploaded in MediaFire, a file storage site located outside of Japan. The links were posted in a web site called “Music Posting Elite Meeting Place”. The website was created using links collection (similar to bookmarks collection) service called “ALink”.

This is the first time that a person was arrested for violation of Copyright Act by providing and distributing links of illegal music files that were uploaded to an overseas storage site. This act of uploading music files to storage site outside of Japan in order to avoid Japanese legal system was viewed as a premeditated criminal act to infringe on copyright.

The copyrights of the music files concerned were managed by JASRAC (Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, Japanese:日本音楽著作権協会 ), which until 2001 was the sole musical copyright administration society. However, since October 2001, competitors were allowed to get into the copyright administration business in Japan.

According to JASRAC, this is a case of illegal distribution of music, acts like this hamper the development of music culture. They will continue stamp out illegal distribution on the net actively together with the police.

ALink is a service where the site creator and other viewers were able to freely enter links of other websites in format similar to a forum or BBS. The entered links are listed together so that they are easily accessible.

The ALink service is provided by UIC. The website UIC provides “Rental CGI Service”, which is mainly message boards or guestbooks in various forms. However, the site itself does not seem to be actively maintained. Their own copyright statement at the bottom of the screen was dated 2000-2003. The page to register a new account was dated 2007.

The ALink site “Music Posting Elite Meeting Place (Japanese: 曲貼り精鋭達のたまり場 )” in concern seems to have been closed.

The arrest was announced by the Hokkaido Prefectural Police and Sapporo Central Police Station on the 1st march 2010.

The open source office productivity suite OpenOffice.org is slowly but gradually gaining acceptance and support in governments and enterprises all around the world. The strength of the product of course is its unbeatable price, which is free, no-charge, zero, null; but also its real powerful office document processing capabilities.

The other appeal of OpenOffice.org is its offering of its office productivity suite in many platforms and languages.

Templates site also has sections for many different languages.

For example, for Japanese users, there are over 60 templates in OpenOffice.org Templates Japanese section, with the majority being presentation background for OpenOffice.org Impress.

Japan TemplateBANK now also offers over one hundred free OpenOffice.org templates, including business cards (20), fax (20), greeting cards (59), moving notice cards (6), school enrollment and graduation cards (10).

These are Japanese style documents and cards, But many of the cards do have universal appeal to all cultures, some are really cute.

The templates offered by TemplateBANK are free for personal use for “Free Membership”, registration required.

“Bing” market share in home is only 2%, accoding to a recent survey in Japan

The survey is conducted by Japan.internet.com and iBridge Research+ (Research Plus).

The research surveyed 300 people between the age of 20 to 60, 49% male, 51% female. The age distribution is 18.7% in their 20’s, 33.2% in 30’s, 26.3% in 40’s, 12.7% in 50’s, and 9% in 60’s.

The survey asked people which search services they use as their main search engine at home the past year, since “Bing” entered the search engine market last year.
The results, Yahoo is 268 people (89%), Google 190 (63%), Infoseek Rakuten 78 (26%), while Bing is only 6 (2%).

Other main search being used at home in Japan are, goo 62 (20.6%), BIGLOBE 41 (13.6%), MSN 39 (13%), nifty 16 (5.3%), livedoor 12 (4%), Baidu 7 (2.3%), others 24 (8%).

When asked what they use as the main search engines at work, the result is, Yahoo 117 people (39%), Google 84 (28%), Infoseek Rakuten 17 (5.6%), while Bing is 4 (1.3%).

Panasonic Launches 3D VIERA, World First Full HD 3D TV In April 2010

Panasonic’s world first Full HD (High Definition) 3D TV in 54-inch and 50-inch plasma display will be launching in Japan on 23 April 2010.

The new technology being used on this new HD 3D TV is called “Frame Sequential” which produces pictures for left eye then right eye alternatively. A special “Active Shutter 3D Glasses” will allow individual left and right pictures to be shown to the viewer in synchronization to produce the 3D effects.

The TV displays only left or right eye image one at a time, a “High Speed Response” system switches left and right images alternatively every 1/120 second, that is twice the speed of a 2D display.

Because plasma display uses the “Impulse Luminescence System”, this special characteristic is suitable to produce the “High Speed Response” required for 3D display.

In the past, after light is produced on the display there is an afterglow remains, this afterglow makes pictures appear blur and makes viewing tiring for viewers.

The VIERA HD 3D TV display tackles afterglow problems on two fronts. It reduces the general afterglow by over 60%, making pictures appear sharper and more detailed for both 2D and 3D programmings.

Past display technology produces light from "Dim to Bright" in terms of brightness, the afterglow therefore overlaps the next image frame making long time viewing tiring for the viewers. The new display reduces the "Afterglow Luminescence" by producing light from "Bright to Dim". Less afterglow remains to overlap the next image frame.

New display panel technology also enables the TV to produce "Full Black Panel" property. Black color is deeper, therefore making other colors brighter and more defined.

Each Panasonic 3D VIERA comes with one pair of 3D glasses. The glasses weights 63 grams and comes with two nose pads designed to ergonomically fit all users including adults and children.

The VT2 also uses less energy, compared to Panasonic V1 50-inch, the VT2 50-inch uses 13% less energy.

There are other neat functions on the 3D TV such as, TV programming guide, voice reading out of TV guide, simultaneous 2 channels viewings with different size modes, listen to TV with speakers and headphone simultaneously therefore enabling to adjust volume according to the needs of individual viewers, SD card slot and USD slot to display photos.

There is no announcement of recommended retail price of the 3D VIERA or the price of extra 3D glasses yet.

Life Expectancy Of Okinawan Is Shortening, Who Is The Culprit? Fast Food.

People on the Japanese islands of Okinawa (沖縄) were not only famous for their long life span but also the health quality of their elderly. Their centenarians are not only very old but most are able to enjoy active and happy life styles.

According to the World Health Organization (2006) and Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省), Okinawan has the highest life expectancy in the world, and the highest in Japan.

However, Okinawa might not be able to enjoy this "Long Life" status much longer. Western fast food culture is shortening the life expectancy of Okinawa especially the male population. According to a 1985 survey by Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省), both male and female Okinawan have the highest life expectancy in Japan. Ten years later, in a 2005 survey, the female Okinawan population still maintains this number one status but the male population has dropped to 25th place, making Okinawa the "Short Life Prefecture" in Japan.

Obesity is becoming a norm, one in two adult male is considered obese. Obesity contributes to the increase of diabetic and cardiovascular diseases.

Health experts advices people that traditional Okinawan food is much healthier, because they mainly consists of vegetables, soya beans or soy products and fish. However, people should also add milk or diary products into their diet because traditional Okinawan diet lacks diary products which provide the needed calcium.
Western fast food contains excess amount of calories, they are high in fat, cholesterol and salt; all are not conducive of a long and health life.

All these are not new news, the problem is that all these fat, cholesterol, salt, artificial favoring, and preservatives laden food tend to be more delicious!

China Baidu And Japan Rakuten Announce Joint Venture to Establish Chinese Mega Online Mall

Baidu, China largest search engine and third largest in the world, and Rakuten, Japan largest e-commerce company, announce a joint venture aiming to establish and operate China largest online shopping mall.

The online shopping mall will create a platform for other businesses to establish their internet outlets to provide products and services to the vast number of Chinese internet users, which is estimated to be around 384 million users in 2009.

In the future, the Chinese online shopping mall and Rakuten Japanese could be linked up to allow Chinese and Japanese businesses to promote their services and products in both markets.

The online shopping mall is expected to start operating within this year (2010).

Japan Sky Perfect JSAT offers 3D Programme This Summer.

With the advance of 3D movies from Hollywood, and TV makers announcing launching 3D TV in the coming months, Sky Perfect JSAT will they will start offering 3D content from 2010 summer, the announcement was made on the 27th January.

3D TV is being seen as revolutionary as TV switching from black and white to colors.

After researching and reviewing different content and possibility for the past year, Sky Perfect JSAT will first concentrate on live events especially as sports events.

Sky Perfect JSAT current "SUKAPA!HD" offers 58 HD channels. They are planning to offer 85 channels by the end of December 2010, and 100 channels by 2012.

In the beginning, there will only be two to three 3D programmings available monthly. Whether those will be free or paid content are still under consideration.
