New Logo for the Eclipse Foundation
Eclipse began as an IBM Canada project. It was developed by Object Technology International (OTI) as a Java-based replacement for the Smalltalk based VisualAge family of IDE products, which itself had been developed by OTI. In November 2001, a consortium was formed to further the development of Eclipse as open source. In January 2004, the Eclipse Foundation was created.
The Eclipse foundation has traditionally been viewed as serious and boring, so the foundation has been looking for a refresh their image, a new Logo and new brand identity have been in the works for quite some time.

The Eclipse Foundation announced that after rounds of community feedback and market testing they have selected a new logo to help broaden the appeal of the Eclipse to a younger demographic.
“Eclipse is always looking to expand our community,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director at the Eclipse Foundation. “Children are the future and we need to get them using Eclipse as early as possible.”

Ian Skerrett, Director of Marketing at the Eclipse Foundation spearheaded the initiative. “At first I was hesitant to initiate a change to our branding. The Eclipse brand is very well known around the world. But once I sat in on one of the market tests, I was floored: the looks on the children’s faces when they launched Eclipse for the first time was a real eye opener.”
The announcement was made today, First of April.
