Banshee 1.7.0 Released

Banshee 1.7.0, the first of the 1.7 beta series leading to 1.8, has been released.

Banshee 1.7.0 is the first of the unstable 1.7 series, leading up to a stable 1.8 release in the fall. It contains many bug fixes for 1.6.0, as well as new features and enhancements.

VideoLAN x264 Achieves Blu-Ray Compatibility

VideoLAN x264 is a free library written from scratch for encoding H264/AVC video streams. It announces to be the first free software Blu-ray encoder, the first free software encoder to be able to generate Blu-ray compliant video.

H.264/AVC was the product of a partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). The ITU-T H.264 standard and the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 AVC standard (formally, ISO/IEC 14496-10 – MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding) are jointly maintained so that they have identical technical content. H.264 is used in such applications as Blu-ray Disc, videos from YouTube and the iTunes Store.

With x264’s powerful compression, it’s quite possible to author Blu-ray disks on DVD9s (dual-layer DVDs) or even DVD5s (single-layer DVDs) with a reasonable level of quality.

However, in accordance with the Blu-ray specifications, the disc image file uses the UDF 2.5 filesystem, which may be incompatible with some older virtual drive and DVD burning applications. To get the menus and such working correctly, an actual Blu-ray player is also needed.

In addition to Blu-ray support, x264 now has these features:

Native variable-framerate ratecontrol, which makes sure your encodes get a correct target bitrate and proper limiting of maximum bitrate even if the duration of every frame is different and the “framerate” is completely unknown.
Supports pulldown (telecine) in much the same fashion as it is handled in MPEG-2. The calling application can pass in flags representing how to display a frame, allowing easy transcoding from MPEG-2 sources with pulldown, such as broadcast television.
Exports HRD timing information, which is critical for compliant transport stream muxing.

VideoLAN x264 announced x264’s Blu-ray compliance on 25 April 2010. VideoLAN x264 is released under the terms of the GNU GPL.

Banshee 1.6 Released

Banshee 1.6 is a stable release, the culmination of a 14 months of work by 53 developers, 265 bugs were fixed since 1.5.1.

New features and enhancements:

Play Queue Auto DJ
Keep playing music according to selected artist, album, song, rating, or score mode randomly in a Play Queue.
Sync Device From Playlist
Either manually manage what files are added or removed to your device, or choose a playlist to sync from. You can make a size-limited smart playlist to sync just the right amount to your device.
Grid View
A new grid mode visible in the modified Album browser.
Type-ahead Find in Track, Artist, and Album Lists
Type-ahead Find jumps you to the first track to match your query, it is an alternative to filtering.
Automatic Scoring
Songs are now given scores, updated as they are played and skiped. The score can be used in searches and smart playlists, and serve as a basis for ratings.
New Shuffle Modes
In regular shuffle mode, songs can be shuffled randomly by Song, Artists or Album where every track has an equal probability. Newly added modes are shuffled by Rating and Score, where favorite songs are played more frequently.

This extension shows YouTube videos in the Context Pane related to what is being played. Selected YouTube video can be played within Banshee.

Banshee is written to be easily enhanced by extensions. In fact, the Play Queue, Podcasting, and Last.fm support are all extensions. Extensions can be turned on and off within the Extensions tab of the Preferences dialog (under the Edit menu).

Many extensions are included in Banshee itself. Others are developed and packaged with Banshee Community Extensions.

A new sub-project named Banshee Community Extensions has been created. Its code is hosted on Gitorious, and its bugs tracked in bugzilla.gnome.org.

- Telepathy – Browse your IM friends' music library, download or stream their tracks and share what you're listening to.
- Ubuntu One Music Store – Browse, preview and download songs from the Ubuntu One Music Store.

Banshee is packaged for many Linux distributions, and is the default media player for several.

Banshee for Mac OS X is a beta-quality technology preview with no device (iPod etc) support, CD support, or video support. It is not yet as complete or as stable as Linux releases. Banshee for OS X runs on Intel 10.5 and newer. 10.4 and older and the PowerPC architecture are not supported.

Miro 3.0 Video Player & Miro Video Converter Released

Miro 3.0, a major new version of the video play and Internet television application has been released.

Miro plays video and audio media files in a variety of different formats. This includes Ogg Theora and Vorbis, two formats that are distributed freely and aren’t patent encumbered.

Many publishers have high definition versions of their podcasts available on the Internet. Miro plays the episodes in higher quality than what is available on tv.

User can subscribe to podcasts on the Internet through Miro. Miro can download media items in the podcasts using HTTP as well as BitTorrent. Miro will tell user when the subscribed podcasts to have new items to view. The built-in content guide, Miro Guide, has thousands of free video feeds (many in HD) and streaming video sites. These video and audio programmings and shows are available legally, programmings such as National Geographic, BBC, NPR, PBS, Revision3, BoingBoing TV, Democracy Now, education, news, space, sports, nature, TED Talks, Discovery Channel, Onion News Network, Nova, NASA, tutorials, electronics, do-it-yourself, conference sessions, yoga, health, etc.

VideoLAN Claims Security Teams Warnings Are Outdated By 2 Years

VideoLAN stated in their website on 22 March 2010 that ISS and SecurityForce are spreading outdated security issue which was fixed 2 years ago.

“So-called “Security” teams are spreading wrong information about an “unpatched” security issue in VLC.
ISS and SecurityFocus are presenting a security issue in versions of VLC, that are, in fact, more than 2 years old. This issue has been fixed since a long time and since 20 versions of VLC.”

The latest version of VLC Media Player is VLC 1.0.5, and it is not affected.

VideoLAN is a project, run by volunteers, backed-up by a non-profit organization, which produces free and open source software for multimedia, released under the GNU General Public License.

Announced from Banshee project, Banshee 1.5.6 (aka 1.6 RC2) was released on 20 March, with lots and lots of bug fixes. Help test it, report bugs, and make Banshee 1.6 as solid as it is sexy!

Banshee 1.5.5 was just released, March 10, 2010, including gapless playback, a grid album browser, and a YouTube extension! It contains lots of good bug fixes as well – the 1.5.4 SQL crash is fixed with the additional QA given to this release. Download it here.

The VideoLAN Project Advises Against The Use Of Clam AntiVirus

According to VLC News, VLC issued a Security Advisory that “Clam AntiVirus incorrectly claims that the x86 SSE2-accelerated I:4:2:2 chroma conversion plugin as being a computer trojan. This affects builds of VLC media player with recent versions of the MingW compilation toolchain.”

This may make copying, installing and/or using of VLC media player or applications based on LibVLC impossible.

An anti-virus database has to be up-to-date to be of much use. Around 20% of tested antivirus incorrectly detected as VLC 1.0.5 as a trojan at the time of release. Kaspersky Anti-Virus was updated within one business day. The VideoLAN project advises against the use of Clam AntiVirus, because users should not rely on a security software which fails to be updated within a full month period.
