Rock Your Firefox, the website created by Mozilla to feature reviews, feedback, and insights from people around the Web who are using Firefox Add-ons to make their online experience better. New highlights, relevant and helpful Firefox Add-ons will be added every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The one “Featured Add-on” on launch day, 11 March 2010, is Yoono, a social networking add-on with over 3.8M downloads. Yoono Add-on put popular social networking and IM (Instant Messaging), such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Friendfeed, AIM and Yahoo IM, on Firefox sidebar. There is also a desktop version of Yoono.

According to Mozilla regarding the new website:

Why Rock Your Firefox: Over a hundred million people worldwide have downloaded nearly 2 billion add-ons. We created Rock Your Firefox as a way to showcase the amazing depth, breadth, and power of Firefox Add-ons in a simple and friendly way that even my mom would understand.

How it began: Rock Your Firefox was originally a Facebook application launched by Mozilla in 2007 to let add-on fans share their favorite add-ons with their friends and discover new ways to customize Firefox. Although we retired this application several months ago, we liked its strong branding so much that we decided to revive it for this exciting new site.

The success of Firefox undoubtedly linked to its vast array of quality add-ons. When Firefox first came into the scene, it was promoted as a simple and fast browser, unlike the bloated Mozilla browser at that time. Then came the add-ons, which became one of the major reasons for many of the people switching from Microsoft IE (Internet Explorer).

People who use Firefox are generally more technologically aware and willing to try something new something better, that is what made them switched from IE in the first place. When Google’s Chrome first appeared, it was fast but too basic for practical use. Then it had gotten more polished, a small number of people started to switched. One of the major reasons that kept Firefox users from switching to Chrome was the Firefox add-ons. But now, the number and the quality of Google Chrome Extensions has improved so dramatically, Mozilla should start to worry.

Firefox is no long the lean mean browsing machine that it was famous for. Its gecko rendering engine is getting old and bloated. In many speed tests, Chrome has consistently out run Firefox in many areas.

Mozilla’s Add-on for Firefox is already a well established website. It already has some Featured, Recommended, Popular lists on the front page. Is this “Rock Your Firefox” a duplicated effort?

Is this new Rock Your Firefox website a desperate attempt to raise interests of Firefox by highlighting popular and essential add-ons, which Chrome do not yet have, to make as many users as possible hook on Firefox and its add-ons before they switch over to Chrome?

Speed of browser has always been important. In the past it was the issue with internet connection speed, though now broadband has become a normal, speed remain a major issue, because the content itself has became so much more complicated, with Ajax and Flash and Videos streaming etc; and people open multiple tabs at one time. While Firefox is still a very good browser, it should put more efforts into its fundamentals first, security and speed.

Its interface is a notepad with a Wiki-like linking system to connect notes together. Words in the note body that match existing note titles automatically become hyperlinks, making it simple to construct a personal wiki.

Below is an example. “Book 1″ is our first note, with the word “Tomato” in the content. Then when we create a second note “Book 2″. The title is “Tomato”, Tomboy instantly finds that there is a note called “Book 1″ that contains the word “Tomato”, so it create a link in “Book 1″ linking to the new “Book 2″ automatically. Also, during writing “Book 2″, “Book 1″ was mentioned, so Tomboy creates a link to automatically there as will.
If names or note titles are changed, Tomboy will ask users if links should also be updated.

Development version is meant for developers and for those who want to download and try out the latest features and improve Tomboy. This version is likely to have bugs.

Tomboy is an application for Linux and Unix; Windows and Mac OS X versions are also available.

Instructions for installing a Tomboy Windows release

Make sure at least .NET 3.5 is installed (this should be included by default in Vista and Windows 7, but may require an additional install for Windows XP)

It is a day of grassroots effort to educate the public about the importance of Free Document Formats and Open Standards in general.

The most common document formats today are Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats. If a user received a Word, Excel or PowerPoint document, the user can go to Microsoft website and download Word Viewer, Excel Viewer or PowerPoint Viewer free of charge to open, view, and print the document, but the user will not be able to edit the document, unless the user purchase a copy of the software.

However, for a Mac user or a Linux user or other non-Windows users, there is no free Word Viewer or Excel Viewer available, in fact, there is no Viewers for operating systems other then Microsoft Windows period.

If the document is a government forms, any citizens wish to access the electronic document are forced to buy and use Microsoft Windows just to view the document. What if Microsoft decides to stop offering the free Word Viewer and Excel Viewer? If editing is needed, again purchasing Microsoft Office is a must. The government is in fact is intentionally or unintentionally forced their citizens to buy Microsoft products.

How about businesses? It might seem natural that commercial companies pay for their Office Productivity software because it is a tool for them conduct businesses.

What if Microsoft decides to raise the price of their essential Word and Excel programs? What if Microsoft go bankrupt or disappear all together tomorrow (famous reputable big companies do go bankrupt and disappear, remember Pam Am and Lehman Brothers)? Would the secrets of the formats disappear too?

The Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats are almost the de facto document standards at the moment. However, these standards are made by, supplied by and ruled by one company. If this one company decides to change its standards or if anything happens to this one company, would we still be able to read our documents 10, 20, 50 years from now?

That is why we need Free Document Formats and Open Standards. When formats of documents are standardized in an open formats, any software maker can learn those details and make an application that can open, read, print and edit those documents. The software application can be commercial or non-commercial. Users have the power to choose what their need. And because the formats are open, people are able to create software for the formats even 100 years from now.

Document Freedom Day (DFD) is to promote the use of Free Document Formats and Open Standards.

Complementary to Software Freedom Day, DFD aims to have local teams all over the world organize events on the last Wednesday of March. This is the third year that Document Freedom Day, the first year was on 26th March 2008. The DFD organizer is again looking for people around the world to join their effort this year.

DFD’s main goals are:

promotion and adoption of free document formats

forming a global network

coordination of activities that happen on last Wednesday of March, Document Freedom Day

Once a year, DFD organizer will celebrate Document Freedom Day as a global community. Between those days, DFD organizer will be focused on facilitating community action and building awareness for issues of Document Freedom and Open Standards. DFD organizer hopes that more people will join the DFD community.

Who’s behind DFD?

Document Freedom Day (DFD) is organized with help of many different players. It is a community effort that DFD organizer put together every year.

All of them will help DFD organizer to get the word out on DFD 2010, be it by publishing articles about Open Standards, publicizing the campaign, writing posts for the DFD blog, or simply helping DFD by putting the campaign icon on their websites.

Document Freedom Day’s success is also based on the commitment of teams of volunteers worldwide.

There are many ways to take part on this campaign:

Put a banner in your websites, linking to DFD website. There are artworks and banners available in DFD Artwork2010 page.

Publish a blog post on Document Freedom Day, or Open Standards, and spread the word about the campaign. Send DFD a link, and they will include it in the DFD website.

Use microblog to spread DFD news and articles. Tag them using !dfd or #dfd2010

Organize an activity in your city on March 31st. For ideas on activities, check the Document Freedom Day website.

Donate money to DFD.

Become a partner organization. Contact Campaign Team on how to do that.

The Document Freedom Day web site is currently hosted by Free Software Foundation Europe.

Open Standards and Open Documents?

Open Standards allow people to share all kinds of data freely and with perfect fidelity. They prevent lock-in and other artificial barriers to interoperability, and promote choice between vendors and technology solutions. There are many legal definitions and/or interpretation of the term Open Standards in different organizations and countries. The basic ideas is that with Open Standards, users are able to:

choose any operating system or application and still be able to read and edit all old documents.

collaborate with others regardless of which software they are using.

use any software of choice to interact with your government.

Open Standards can lead to:

more competition in software, resulting in better pricing and service

increased competition in hardware, meaning more innovative and cost-effective solutions

lower taxes as a result of more effective governmental IT solutions that avoid the cost of lock-in

As documents and services are increasingly transformed from paper to electronic form, there is a growing problem that governments and their constituents and businesses may not be able to access, retrieve and use critical records, information and documents in the future. To enable the public and private sectors to have greater control over and direct management of their own records, information and documents, OpenDocument Format (ODF) is being promoted to be the primary document format for governments and businesses.
The Open Document Format for Office Applications (also known as OpenDocument or ODF) is an XML-based file format for representing electronic documents such as spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. While the specifications were originally developed by Sun Microsystems, the standard was developed by the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) TC – OASIS ODF TC, committee of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) consortium and based on the XML format originally created and implemented by the OpenOffice.org office suite. In addition to being an OASIS standard, it is published (in one of its version 1.0 manifestations) as an ISO/IEC international standard, ISO/IEC 26300:2006 Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) v1.0.

Ottawa, Canada – March 8, 2010 - The Eclipse Foundation today announced new initiatives to support the ongoing growth of the Eclipse Mylyn ecosystem. The open source Mylyn project is a widely extended framework for integrating task and application lifecycle management (ALM) tools with the Eclipse IDE. The project will create new sub-projects representing key IDE/ALM integration categories. New projects include: the “Tasks” project for integrating task and change management; “SCM” for integrating source code management; “Build” for integrating build management and continuous integration; and “Review” for collaborative code review. The new sub-project leadership will support a broader range of leading Agile vendors contributing to the ongoing evolution of Mylyn.

“Mylyn’s rapid adoption by Agile and ALM vendors means that we now have to scale up both the integration frameworks and the governance,” said Mik Kersten, creator and leader of the Mylyn project and CEO of Tasktop Technologies. “With more than a million monthly downloads, inclusion in nearly all Eclipse distributions and 45 ALM integrations, Mylyn and its ecosystem are ensuring that developers have first-rate task management tools integrated with the Eclipse IDE and the productivity benefits of the task-focused interface, no matter how diverse their ALM stack.”

The new sub-projects have provided a channel for vendors in the ALM community to become more deeply involved with the Mylyn project. Organizations leading and contributing to the new sub-projects include Rally Software for “Tasks”, Cloudsmith for “Builds”, Perforce for “SCM” and INSO for “Review”. In addition, Mylyn will now embrace the new Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) web service standards for ALM.

“Tasktop and IBM share a common commitment to enabling interoperability across the ALM lifecycle,” said Scott Bosworth, IBM Strategist and OSLC Program Manager. “Both companies contributed to the initial OSLC change management API, which set the stage for the even broader ALM scope and industry participation that the OSLC community is experiencing today. We expect the new Mylyn sub-projects to accelerate adoption of OSLC’s open interfaces for ALM interoperability.”

At its core, Mylyn provides integrated and personalized task management through its ground-breaking task-focused interface. As the Eclipse IDE’s adoption has grown beyond Java, Mylyn has extended its support to programming domains such as mobile C/C++, PHP and Spring Framework powered enterprise Java applications.

“Thanks to its broad ecosystem of open source and commercial integrations, Mylyn now supports nearly all of the popular ALM tools used by Eclipse users,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “Mylyn will extend this reach by growing the community of committers and contributors working to make Mylyn an industry standard framework for Agile ALM.”

“Mylyn’s success comes from broad bottom-up adoption by developers,” said Kersten. “While the new Mylyn sub-projects will provide reference integrations to popular open source ALM tools such as Bugzilla for Tasks, Git for SCM and Hudson for Build, the growing demand for Mylyn in the enterprise is being met by Tasktop Pro, which integrates a diverse range of commercial tools for Agile ALM.”

Mylyn downloads and product information:
The project restructuring proposal, including a list of participating vendors, is at http://www.eclipse.org/project-slides/mylyn-restructuring-review.html.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 4, 2010 – HDMI Licensing, LLC, the agent responsible for licensing the High-Definition Multimedia Interface® (HDMI®) specification, today announced, on behalf of the HDMI Founders, the release of HDMI Specification Version 1.4a featuring key enhancements for 3D applications including the addition of mandatory 3D formats for broadcast content as well as the addition of the 3D format referred to as Top-and-Bottom. The complete HDMI Specification Version 1.4a, along with the 1.4a version of the Compliance Test Specification (CTS), is available to Adopters on the HDMI Adopter Extranet.

An extraction of the 3D portion of Specification Version 1.4a is available for public download on the HDMI Web site at http://www.hdmi.org. The purpose of the extraction document is to provide public access to the 3D portion of the HDMI Specification for those companies and organizations that are not HDMI Adopters but require access to this portion of the Specification.

“We published these latest enhancements to support the market need for broadcast 3D content,” said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. “When we launched 1.4 in June of 2009, we deferred the selection of mandatory 3D format(s) for broadcast content until the market direction was more clearly defined. The market has spoken and the HDMI Consortium has listened and responded to accommodate those market needs.”

The latest HDMI Specification adds key enhancements to support the market requirements for bringing broadcast 3D content into the home:

The addition of Top-and-Bottom to the Specification.

The addition of two mandatory formats for broadcast content:

Side-by-Side Horizontal

Top-and-Bottom

With the addition of these two mandatory formats, the HDMI Specification Version 1.4a provides a level of interoperability for devices designed to deliver 3D content over the HDMI connection. The mandatory 3D formats are:

3D Mandatory Formats

For movie content:

Frame Packing

1080p @ 23.98/24Hz

For game content:

Frame Packing

720p @ 50 or 59.94/60Hz

For broadcast content:

Side-by-Side Horizontal

1080i @ 50 or 59.94/60Hz

Top-and-Bottom

720p @ 50 or 59.94/60Hz

1080p @ 23.97/24Hz

Implementing the mandatory formats of the HDMI Specification facilitates interoperability among devices, allowing devices to speak a common 3D language when transmitting and receiving 3D content. The mandatory requirements for devices implementing 3D formats are:

Displays – must support all mandatory formats.

Sources – must support at least one mandatory format.

Repeaters – must be able to pass through all mandatory formats.

HDMI Adopters will have 90 days from the publication of the Specification Version 1.4a to build and sell products that are compliant with 1.4a as well as pass the CTS Version 1.4a. This also applies to legacy set-top boxes that may have upgraded to use Specification Version 1.4 signaling.

For more information about the HDMI specification please visit http://www.hdmi.org.

About HDMI Licensing, LLC

HDMI Licensing, LLC is the agent responsible for licensing the HDMI specification, promoting the HDMI standard and providing education on the benefits of the HDMI specification to Adopters, retailers and consumers. The HDMI specification was developed by Hitachi, Ltd.; Panasonic Corporation; Philips Consumer Electronics International, B.V.; Silicon Image, Inc.; Sony Corporation; Technicolor S.A. (formerly Thomson S.A.) and Toshiba Corporation as the all-digital interface standard for the consumer electronics and personal computer markets. The HDMI specification combines uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio, and data in a single digital interface to provide crystal-clear digital quality over a single cable. HDMI Licensing, LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Image, Inc.

phpBB advices to all who already have updated to 3.0.7 that it is of critical importance to update to 3.0.7-PL1.

A critical bug the permission handling for feeds in 3.0.7 makes it possible for users to bypass permission settings under the following circumstances:

Feeds are enabled

Any of the posts or topics feeds are enabled

The unauthorised user – or one of the groups they are a member of – have forum permissions set on a private forum

If user has excluded a forum from the list of forums that provide feeds, it is unaffected

phpBB recommends the use of a regular update routine over manually editing files. phpBB board will not recognize the update if the board was edited manually.

He was arrested in connection of personally creating a large number of internet hyperlinks to copyrighted music files that were uploaded in MediaFire, a file storage site located outside of Japan. The links were posted in a web site called “Music Posting Elite Meeting Place”. The website was created using links collection (similar to bookmarks collection) service called “ALink”.

This is the first time that a person was arrested for violation of Copyright Act by providing and distributing links of illegal music files that were uploaded to an overseas storage site. This act of uploading music files to storage site outside of Japan in order to avoid Japanese legal system was viewed as a premeditated criminal act to infringe on copyright.

The copyrights of the music files concerned were managed by JASRAC (Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, Japanese:日本音楽著作権協会 ), which until 2001 was the sole musical copyright administration society. However, since October 2001, competitors were allowed to get into the copyright administration business in Japan.

According to JASRAC, this is a case of illegal distribution of music, acts like this hamper the development of music culture. They will continue stamp out illegal distribution on the net actively together with the police.

ALink is a service where the site creator and other viewers were able to freely enter links of other websites in format similar to a forum or BBS. The entered links are listed together so that they are easily accessible.

The ALink service is provided by UIC. The website UIC provides “Rental CGI Service”, which is mainly message boards or guestbooks in various forms. However, the site itself does not seem to be actively maintained. Their own copyright statement at the bottom of the screen was dated 2000-2003. The page to register a new account was dated 2007.

The ALink site “Music Posting Elite Meeting Place (Japanese: 曲貼り精鋭達のたまり場 )” in concern seems to have been closed.

The arrest was announced by the Hokkaido Prefectural Police and Sapporo Central Police Station on the 1st march 2010.
